The past week was certainly a mixed one for Phear Park bowlers, but the weather has been kind and the Over-60s B team played their opening match when they visited Bradninch, writes David Evans.
Bradninch is always a difficult place to visit and this latest visit proved no different as we succumbed to a 13 shot defeat. However, there was some success with Bob Baker’s rink squeezing a win with a two on the last end so we came away with two points. Park had a full quota of friendlies and the first was Paignton away and, as always, was a very enjoyable fixture, but this year it was a loss of four rinks to one and an overall 22 shot deficit with the only success coming from the Sarah Westacott rink.
The weather was good for a visit to Topsham, who were too strong and read the green better and won by 27 shots with the triple of Horne, Heale and Westacott being the only Phear Park success.
Finally, we sent four mixed triples to Belmont; we rarely seem successful there, but this year we won two rinks and halved another and came away with a winning 65-59 score.
Our best rink of P Beresford, F Downend and skip Rod Davidson won 18-10.
Again, the rink skipped by Sarah Westacott and helped by K Beresford and T Hanson won, and it is pleasing to note that Sarah has skipped a winning rink in the first four games of the season
The players are all really looking forward to having a home match because the green looks in beautiful condition.
