PHEAR Park duo Gerry Sharland and David Evans progressed to the next stage of the unbadged pairs competition when they won the section final by defeating opponents from Madeira by four shots, writes Lawrie Harries.

To make further progress in the competition, the Park pair must overcome opponents from Plymouth later this month.

Park entertained tourists Shaftesbury (Dorset) in a six rink friendly and lost by nine shots.

Liz Young, Jackie Cruse, David Martin and Gerry Sharland (skip) were one of the two successful Park rinks, finishing 21-12 ahead.

The other winning rink was Roy Bateman, Betty Bourne, Mike Pope and skip Sarah Westacott who won by 27 shots to 10.

A good performance by Les Parr’s rink of Joan Evans, Margaret Lock, and Richard Cooper who came back from 14 shots to nil down to take the lead only to drop shots in the concluding ends and end losing by just two shots.

A journey to Tiverton Park saw Phear Park return winners by 95 shots to 86.

Tom Russell skipped Bob Smith, Dot Russell and Eileen Burnham to a 20-11 win.

Isabel Richards, Jack Coates, Anne Harding and John Robins (skip) scored eleven shots over the last five ends to win by15 shots.

There was a less comfortable win for Les Parr, Liz Young, David Lloyd and skip Glenda Pope who conceded eight shots on the last four ends but hung on to win by 22 shots to 21.
