Phear Park's season got off to a slightly stuttering start, writes Laurie Harries.

A home friendly with Exeter-based Belmont was curtailed after 18 ends because of persistent rain!

That was a shame for at the premature end the game was finely poised at two rinks each, although the visitors were ahead by three shots.

Leighton Burston’s rink of Liz Nelson, Margaret Spencer and Tim Flather gained a comfortable 20-13 win and obviously enjoyed playing in the rain!

While John Horne, Roland Heale, Faye Downend and Rob Mottershead (skip) came back from nine shots down to claim two shots on the last end and a victory by 14 shots to 12.

Needless to say, Park’s losing skips were confident that they could have made up the deficit had the game been played over the full 21ends!

Park’s A squad in the Exeter and District Over-60s triples league started the season well with a win at Tiverton Boro by nine shots.

Dave Horne (skip) John Horne and Roland Heale produced a solid performance and were always in control, running out winners by 20 shots to 8.

The second triple of John Dill, John Whyte and David Evans (skip) were slow to get into their stride and although finishing strongly they went down by three shots. Park gained a creditable six points.

Disappointingly, Park’s B squad had their opening fixture against Cullompton called off at 9pm the night before because the visitors could not raise a team. Park considered claiming the points which would put them top of the league – at least for 24-hours!
