Archant

I am afraid that we have had good and bad news from Phear Park in this week’s report, writes David Evans.

The green looks good and the weather has been wonderful for bowls and it was a very good day last week when we had great success with the visit of neighbours Madeira.

It is always a great pleasure entertaining them, but having being used to a fast green it is always difficult for Madeira to adjust to the reputedly heavy Phear Park green and the home team had the edge over our friends, enjoying success on three of the four triples which left the overall score 71 shots to 48 in Park’s favour. The best Park triple comprised of Burch, Tatchell and Dill.

We followed on this success with the first win of the season for the Over-60s Triples League A team with wins on both rinks and an overall score of 51-16 in the meeting with Topsham B, which led to a full house of eight points.

The rink scores were J Horne, B Smith and D Evans (30-12) and B Summers, D Adams and R Davidson (21-4). I am sure it will not be so easy when we face Crediton this week! Unfortunately, the B team came away from Uffculme away with only two points.

A four triple friendly versus St Thomas finished with two rinks each, but a win for St Thomas. However, thanks to a good win from M Adams, P Beresford and D Adams of 25-11, the overall deficit was only three shots.

We finished the week with an away fixture at Tiverton Park and had to take the scenic route due to the M5 closure due to an overturned caravan!

The green there has improved greatly in recent years and the home team were more familiar to a fast surface than Phear Park, but won by only three shots due to a very good score of 25-11 by the visiting triple of J Horne, M Allen and D Horne.
