Oh dear, another bowls season has finished with typical English weather, although the bowlers have been lucky this year to have uninterrupted good weather for much of the campaign, writes David Evans.

I have begun to realise that for us oldies the season seems to go by so quickly each year and already we are planning our strategy for next year’s Over-60s competitions.

We had planned to have the popular Captain’s Day to finish the season, but it was rained off! In the closing week of the season a flurry of friendly games kept the players busy.

A visit to Uffculme resulted in a heavy 78-49 defeat, although Phear Park were successful in two rinks, the best being that of J Horne, Fay Downend and J Robins. We entertained Feniton and shared the rinks, but managed a win by three shots against a very strong team. Our best rink was the one of Kay Beresford, J Whyte and R Davidson.

There was another away game, albeit the short trip across to local rivals Madeira, where we enjoyed a closed seven shot success and a 3-1 win on the rinks.

Our best winning rink was that of D Lane, S Weclawek and skip T Hanson, who certainly made it all look relatively easy with their 26-12 success! Another away game, this time at Sidmouth, saw an excellent win to complete the season’s friendly games and we obviously enjoyed the nice green rinks there as we came away with a 76-42 win and success on all four rinks played with the top one being that of Marg Lock, J Anderson and J Robins, who actually conceded a seven at one point during their match.

Most of the club members took part in the first Peter Nelson Memorial Trophy and it was contested on what proved to be a lovely afternoon during which 24 ends were played.

The runaway winners, with a score of plus 21, were Bob Smith, Brian Halsey, Fay Downend and David Horne.

For a number of years, Phear Park’s John Robins has booked rinks at Isca Bowls in Exeter on Monday mornings and would welcome any bowlers who would like to join him. Contact John on 01395 275211.

Last, but certainly not least, a couple of important dates for your diaries - the club’s annual general meeting will take place on Saturday, November 10, at the clubhouse and the annual dinner evening will be held at the Manor Hotel, Exmouth on Friday, December 7.
