Budleigh Salterton Games Club Tennis Section Finals 2011 Finals Day at Budleigh Salterton has been notable over the past few years for dubious weather and this year was no exception, writes Bonnie Blackwell.
This year’s matches were played later in the year than usual, on the first Saturday in September.
The skies were overhung with grey cloud but, although chilly, the rain held off.
Play began on grass at 1.30 pm with the Veteran?s Mixed Doubles tournament. Lorna Hitt and John Cross took on Rose Jessen and Keith Ward.
Both sides played steady games with long rallies. At one set all, Rose and Keith finally triumphed to win the final set 6-3.
On another court John Cross and Keith Ward were playing Trevor Teed and Jeremy Brown in the Veteran Men?s Doubles. The first set had to be decided in a tie break and John and Keith won through, then went on to take the second set 6-2.
The Club’s new category this season, Super Vet’s Ladies’ Doubles, was contested by Jennie Capel-Jones and June Brown versus Sue Ryland and Bridget Andrews which the latter pairing won 6-3, 6-4.
At the end of the day spectators were treated to a very fast-paced Mixed Doubles, with Sarah Stott and Steve Yarnall playing Antonia Hislop and Richard Price-Hughes.
Antonia was the youngest player of the afternoon and it was good to see a junior joining in. We would like to encourage more to do so in the future. In spite of her age, or perhaps because of it(!), Antonia and her partner, Richard, won the match 6-2, 7-5.
The last match of the day, the Men’s Singles Final, was moved to an Astroturf court as it was so late in the afternoon that the light was fading. A high standard match was played between Peter Waller and Dion Newcombe, with Dion taking the title 6-4, 6-4.
Mention should be made of the two matches which had to be played the previous weekend. The Ladies Doubles was won by Steph Teed and Anne Tait, 6-2, 6-3, with Rose Jessen and Sarah Stott as runners-up.
The Ladies Vets Doubles was won by Bridget Andrews and Gentian Revill, beating Mags Milne and Rosemary Carmichael, 6-2, 6-4.
Overall, the tournament was well-supported. Tea, sandwiches and cakes were served in the clubhouse afterwards, providing an opportunity to socialise, and the trophies were presented. The Chairman, Mary Jordan, expressed thanks to Ian Lowles for his hard work in organising the Competition throughout the summer and particularly for the organisation of the Finals Day itself. She also thanked Lorna Hitt and Rose Jessen for their contributions to the organisation and running of the tournament, as well as Mike Dickens who was instrumental in getting the courts ready, along with groundsman, Martyn. Special thanks was given to the umpires, namely Dick Odam, Mary Lowles, Ian Lowles and Richard Price-Hughes.
