Exmouth Amateur Boxing club’s Matt Case had the fifth bout of his fledgling career, when he topped the bill at the Frome ABC show, writes Phil Crook.

Case made a good start against the home club’s Jack Packer, landing with a fierce left right combination, but he was then penalised for holding when Packer responded, which seemed harsh!

Case landed the cleaner shots and he seemed to be in front as the bell ended the first round. Packer came out strongly at the start of the second and Case was again warned for holding when it appeared both men were at fault.

Case was then seemingly caught with a punch to the back of the head which went unnoticed and certainly seemed to set him back.

Things were about even at the start of the third round with everything to play for. The bout became a scrappy affair and Case received an official warning for holding.

That meant the Judges having to deduct points.

Again it appeared that both boxers were at fault, but the deduction cost Case dearly and he lost the bout by a narrow point’s margin.

He will have learned a lot from the bout though against a more experienced opponent. Knowing that he can mix it with boxers at a higher level, Case can certainly look forward to 2012 with confidence.
