EXMOUTH Harriers were well represented in the First Chance 10km road race in Exeter on the first Sunday of the New Year, writes Dave Eveleigh.

There were eight harriers on the start line of the event organised by the South West Road Runners the event is on a flat and therefore fast course which attracted almost 500 runners.

The Harriers were particularly prominent in the over-65 men’s category with Roger Rowe, Ray Elston, Jim Wyatt and Mick Allen all choosing to spend their pensioners’ Christmas Bonus on an entry to the race rather than putting it in their Saga Holiday funds.!

Rowe continued his comeback after a long period of inactivity due to injury by finishing 95th overall and first in the category in a time of 42:27.

Ray Elston was 173rd overall (4th over 65) in 47:17, Jim Wyatt 282nd (7th over 65) in 52:27 and Mick Allen 292nd (8th over 65) in 53:09.

The race was won by Kairn Stone in 31:03. Exmouth’s Mike Musgrove was 19th overall and 3rd in the over 40 category in 36:26 with Adam Miller just 100 metres behind in 36:49, both covering the six plus miles at comfortably faster than 10mph pace.

The quietly consistent Andrew Johnson recorded 40:37 to finish 66th overall and 9th over 45 while Dan Morley finished 140th in 45:18.
