The opening match of the Budleigh outdoor season was a mixed round-robin competition hosted by Captains Dianzee Lowe and John Vanstone.
Club president, Ron Tyler was called upon to deliver the initial ceremonial wood, followed by a ‘spider’ which was won by Arthur Morgan after a close measure.
Bowlers could not believe their luck that the weather was sunny and warm and an enjoyable afternoon’s bowling ensued.
The event was wisely restricted to sixteen ends in order not to put too much initial strain on ageing physiques!
After splendid Dutch tea; thanks to all those who assisted in it’s preparation, members of the winning rink were announced to be Lorna Autton, Dorothy MacConville, Stuart Spencer and Stuart Butler with a score of plus 13.
Members were reminded of the joys of outdoor bowling when the weather on the afternoon of the Ladies versus Gentlemen match turned very cold with a biting wind and, after sixteen ends, the relative warmth of the clubhouse was very welcome indeed!
The men were the winners this year with George Woolacott, Alan Purdham, Alan Pearson and Burges Stace contributing a magnificent plus 19.
The best of the ladies’were Lorna Autton, Pat Dowen, D. Mitchell and Dianzee Lowe on plus five.
The popular Thursday evening Umbrella will again be organised by Tony Dealler who confirms that established and newer bowlers will be equally welcomed.
The first of the season is scheduled for April 25, and participants are advised to arrive by 5.15pm. As ever light refreshments will be available.
