While Exmouth Harriers club-mate and now fellow quintogenerian Dawn Teed travelled to the middle of the South Atlantic to post an impressive Marathon performance Joan Mason went instead to the heart of the South of England for hers, writes Dave Eveleigh.

At the Brighton Marathon Joan, already some three years into her time as an Over 50 Veteran, was 4461st in a massive field of over 9000, in other words in the top half of a group which would have contained many, many runners 20 or 30 years her junior!

There were just over 3,000 women running and in that category and the Harriers runner sneaked into the top 1,000, and the top third of finishers with 986th place.

With understatement as typically English as Brighton, she said: “I am really pleased” with regard to her time of four hours 21minutes.
