Last Sunday Exmouth Harriers again took enough runners to a Westward Cross Country League fixture to ensure that they remain in the mix for a high team placing in the Men’s category, writes Dave Eveleigh.

As a gentleman might say this is a local league for local people and Tom Merson is able to run for his local club in this competition.

In a very competitive field of over 160 Merson won the 9.6 km Men’s race in 33:45. The next three scorers were packed close in 20th (Dave Stone 36:48), 22nd (Tony Hatchard 36:50) and 31st (Adam Miller 37:42). Completing the scorers was Jamie Pearson in 51st place (39:00).

Marc Cox was 72nd in 40:10 but don’t forget that there were rival scoring runners behind Cox who each scored a point less because of his efforts.

In fact, Exmouth men were third at this fixture and are third overall with fixtures to come.

The women had just enough to close in a team. They were 10th on the day and are 12th overall.

In a field of over 70, run over 6.1km Cathy Newman was 8th in 25:59, Carly Miller 37th in 30:23 and Dawn Teed 52nd in 32:51.
