Last weekend CS Dynamo rider Mary McFadzean travelled up to Millbrook near Bedford for the women’s Cat3/4 race, writes Andy Waite.

A field of 50 riders lined up. McFadzean was locked on to the pace from the start and was soon away in the leading pack with a good minute built in the first lap.

The course was perfect for her with its tight inclines and steady working ascents.

She looked and felt strong in that landscape. Her new bike boosted her confidence, especially on the faster corners and she looked in control from the off.

Four laps of the 9km course gave her plenty of opportunity to size up the opposition and plan her finish. Minor attacks had all been drawn back quickly and the leading group was tight for the finish.

The closing approach to the line was on the flat open circuit. McFadzean’s tactic was to draw out the sprinters by building the pace early in the approach.

This nearly worked as she led from 500m all the way, only to be caught on the line by two riders dropping her into third place with just half a bike between all three of them!

The third place gives McFadzean enough points to now progress to her second category racing licence, a remarkable achievement in her first seasons racing.
