May was a good month for bowling and most of the greens are in a fine fettle, but the weather has not been a lot of help for Phear Park, writes David Evans.

However, the team manager keeps telling me that the Park are usually slow starters. The A team are not making much progress and have yet to win a game, but hopefully things will begin to improve.

The B team, after a short spurt, came up against two good teams and were very unlucky to come away from the Morchard Bishop game with only two points and on a tricky green the triple of Beresford Ebdon and Baker had a good win 29-16. It is nice to see Mike Ebdon playing well after recovering from a long spell of illness The club travelled to Sidmouth for the first round of top club but narrowly lost by 3-2. Brian Summers had an excellent game against a very experienced opponent in the two wood singles and won easily. In the pairs, D Lane and D Evans, who were both playing their first game of the season, won a remarkable contest!

Having been behind for 20 ends, they grabbed a five on the final end to win by two shots! Rick Tatchell had a good game in the four woods, but was narrowly beaten so Phear Park have to wait a year for another chance in this competition.

There have been a couple of friendlies and a home fixture of triples against Heavitree which resulted in a large loss of 74-101 with the best triple of P Burch, M Killoran and D Adams winning 19-11. We had a better day against Bradninch at home with a win 66-46, with the top triple being the one of R Heale, R Rook and R Smith, who won 21-10.

Now for the big news about the forthcoming Open Day being held at the club. It takes place on Saturday week (June 9) and runs from 10am through until 4pm. Everyone can be assured of a warm welcome and the club really does hope lots of new folk will get along to find out for themselves just what the club – and the sport of bowls – has to offer! So there you have it – an open invite to come and have a try on the green with tuition and then a cup of tea and some cake! For more information on what is always a fun event, why not call the club secretary, John Robins, on 01395 275211.
