MADEIRA proved far too strong for Ottery St Mary when the two sides met head to head on the indoor carpet. The visitors found the switch indoors very hard to come to terms with and as a result they slipped to a heavy defeat in a three rink mixed match, writes Ron Stares. At the quarter way mark the home side had taken a ten shot lead and this was increased to an advantage of 23 after ten ends. The dominance continued and eventually Madeira ran out winners 67-33.The best Madeira winning rink was skipped by John Onley supported by Elizabeth Haynes, Millie Powell and Ron Stares, who won by 14 shots. Against Pinces Gardens, another match played with three rink mixed sides, once again it was clear that the opposition were struggling to adjust from the summer outdoor season to the indoor carpet surface. Another powerful start by the home bowlers saw them race into a ten shot lead after five ends and this had grown to an advantage of 38 shots by the half way stage. The final score very nearly matched the previous win as Madeira ran out 71-23 winners. The best winning rink here was Angela Denner, Harry Clarke, Mike Webb and skip Jean Rainton, winning by 21 shots.
