Snow tried to stop play at the Devon County finals this past weekend, but Madeira lady players beat the weather to travel to the South Hams to compete for the County Championships, writes Jenny Charles.

In the morning, Janine Orchard and Joy Penberthy played a team from North Devon.

The game was evenly poised, but towards the end of the contest, Janine and Joy pulled away to become the new Devon County Pairs Champions, winning by 20 shots to 14. Congratulations, from us all.

In the afternoon, the Madeira fours team of Christine Macaulay, Nikki Fiddimore, Jill Perrin [sub] and Janine Orchard, were in action. They played in a wonderful final which ended with them beaten by a single shot to a strong team from Plymouth.

Our best wishes and speedy recovery goes to Sue Harriott, who played in all games only to miss the final through illness.

Madeira played host to several friendly matches over the past week.

Three ladies teams came from Torbay and the home team won overall by a margin of seven shots, helped by a wonderful win from Val Allam, Myra Furminger and new bowler Diana Cantor, with a score of 22-9.

Dawlish then played host to Madeira in a ladies match. Val Allam’s team was successful with a huge score of 29 shots to 12. Val was joined on this occasion by Pat Harris, Sandy Worcester and Freda Relph.

In a mixed match against visiting Bridport, Madeira were again overall winners with the top scoring rink being the one of George Perrin , Geoff Furminger, A Allen and Janet Grundy, who scored 25 shots to 13.

Snow forced friendly matches to be cancelled over the weekend, but we look forward to bowling again during the week.
