Madeira Open Day a big success

Madeira Bowling Club opened their greens for practise amidst sunshine and showers with a Spring Fair/coffee morning.
The final Thursday of April saw an official start to the season with the annual President’s Day drive.
About 90 members enjoyed a ploughman’s lunch during which President Colin Healy introduced Rob Ashby Crane, who has offered to present a silver salver for a new competition the Ashby Crane Open Singles in remembrance of his father and grandfather who had both enjoyed bowling.
A fun “spider” competition started the afternoon, and then 14 rinks commenced their drive (changing rinks and opponents every four ends) which meant that there were 15 tables for tea, including special guests invited by President Colin.
This took some organising and Liz’s team were very much thanked in the President’s speech. The winners were Derek Dommett, Lin Halpin, Pat Harris, Charlie Darke, but somehow all members won - a happy day avoiding the rain as well. In addition the Madeira Friendship/Benevolent fund for cards/flowers to ill Club members benefited by £100 as well as £100 starting the Captains’ charity this year Exmouth and Lympstone Hospicecare.
The first match against Heavitree the following day resulted in a narrow loss by two ladies’ rinks, whist the men won two and lost two, with an overall score of 91-102.
Last Saturday, following a drive to advertise the event, an Open Day brought in 15 visitors and they were shown by the club’s coaches, just how easy it is to start bowling!
Regular Friday night instruction sessions will commence on May 11, with the start time being 6.30pm and the club hopes many more new members will be found to enjoy the pleasure of outdoor bowling. Phone Keith Weeks 01395 266664 for more information.
Unfortunately heavy rain returned to cancel the needle match of Men versus Ladies on Sunday, but this fixture is not lost as it will be re-scheduled for later in the season.
