It has been a good week for the Madeira ladies. In the National Topclub, the Madeira ladies successfully won their game against Leamington Spa at Olveston, writes Mary Ann Dowrick.

The ladies now enter the quarterfinals at Leamington Spa on the 12th of September. Their opponents are yet to be decided.

A few other successes include the trio of Liz Smerdon with Sue Harriott and Janine Orchard who won their game in the Devon Ladies Benevolent Triples against Barnstaple. This takes the trio to County finals day along with Angie Fish and Jan Roberts who beat their opponents from Topsham in the Over-70s pairs.

And finally, skip Sandie Cox with Nikki Fiddimore and Deirdre Norman play in the quarterfinals of the Devon Ladies Two wood triples. If successful, they will join the others on finals day. We wish all of these Madeira players good luck.

The National Walker Cup, composed of eight top Devon lady bowlers, brought home the bacon, by beating their opponents from Lincolnshire in the final. Congratulations go to Liz Smerdon and Jan Roberts who were selected to be part of this prestigious squad.

In friendly competition, a mixed game against Seaton was a success with Madeira winning 66-53.

Top rink was skipped by Mike Boman with Joyce Coggin, K. Bullard, and Keith Prew 22-10.

In the next friendly against St. Thomas, Madeira was defeated 55-105. Skip Charlie Darke with John Hopkins, Jill Honnor and Tony Wiseman worked their socks off to pull Madeira out of trouble, however their 27-12 just wasn’t enough. Madeira lost the game 55- 105.

Finally, the ladies hosted a friendly against neighbours Budleigh Salterton and the winning streak was in Madeira’s favour, just, 35-33. However, skip Jenny Smith with Betty Roberts and Shirley Brown scored 18-6, making them top rink.
