Madeira ladies enjoy success in national competitions

Madeira enjoyed more success last week in national competitions.

In the Over-60s Singles Joy Penberthy was a 21-16 victor when she met Mary Wakeley from Isca.

In the mixed fours there was a 25-14 win for Jan Roberts, Ken Roberts, Janine Orchard and Mike Orchard when they came up against a four from Kingsley.

In the pairs Nicky Fiddimore and Sue Harriott won 26-11 against club

mates Jean Rainton and Janine Orchard whilst in another pairs encounter Jan Roberts and Catherine King won 21-16 against Yvonne Rainer and Carole Binmore from Honiton.

The Lane Trophy produced a match for the ladies against Sidmouth. In the home element there were a brace of wins with Jose Glaister, Pat Wilkins, Millie Powell and Jean Healey (22-16) and Janet Grundy, Fay Hughes, Thelma Wildon and Nicky Fiddimore (18-15), the winning fours.

In the away part of the contest Janet Allen, Jan Worsfold, Lin Halpin and May Dyson lost 12-22 and there was a 19-13 defeat for Jean Bagnall, Penny Preece, Ann Doidge and Jenny Smith.

In the Foxlands meeting with Honiton the home leg saw Jan Roberts, Christine Macaulay, Joy Penberthy and Catherine King go down 20-15 to Carole Binmore’s team, but there was an emphatic 25-9 win for Dee Norman, Dee Williams, Brenda Marks and Sue Harriott against Julie Grant and company.

In the away element Jill Perrin, Veda Bevan, Jean Rainton and Jacky Howle won 24-21, but there was a 19-11 reversal suffered by Angela Denner, Sandie Cox, Annette Flockhart and Janine Orchard against Shirley Hiscocks and her team.

Last, but certainly not least) there was an in-house match played between the ladies and the men which resulted in a two shot victory for the men (watch out boys the girls are gaining on you).
