Madeira Ladies A defeated Bitton Park at Exonia to reach the County semi-final of Bowls Devon Interclub.

Sue Harriott and her team of Jan Roberts, Christine Macaulay and Nicky Fiddimore had a strong win, while Jacky Howle and her team managed to keep it close, so Madeira A won with a comfortable 50 shots to 33.

Debbie Cole has had an excellent season. On Sunday, she won her Q/F of the two wood singles against Sharon Hockin from Victoria Park by a narrow margin of 15 shots to 13. Her next round for a place as a Leamington Qualifier for the National Finals was against Ella Crouch of Torquay. Sadly Debbie lost a tight match 12 shots to 13.

The Madeira Men played an extremely strong Torquay Kings side in the County Trophy Q/F and put in an excellent effort to win one game, draw another and lose two, but obviously lost overall. They have another encounter against Kings in the Top Club on Saturday at home, so good luck to them.

The annual men’s match between Madeira and Winscombe took place last Monday. This contest, played one year at home and the other away, has been played since 1950 and this year was the 71st occasion they have met, with each club having won 35 games so far.

This year it was Madeira’s turn to win with 124 shots to 112, again very close and with each club winning two triples, losing two and drawing two. A particular highlight of the afternoon was that Club Chairman, and Captain of the Day, Dave Moody presented Graham Clarkson with his County Badge for the second time – no photo was taken the first time, so there is now a record of his achievement.

Following the match, the two teams enjoyed supper together and Winscombe VP and Captain Ken Whatling presented Madeira’s Captain Dave with the fine solid silver Inkpot Stand trophy.

The ladies travelled to Honiton for the three ladies triples return match. Honiton put out a strong team and Madeira certainly enjoyed pitting their skills against them, but Honiton won on all three rinks.
