Bowling continues relatively quietly at Madeira but there have been some good results for both the men and ladies’ sections.

The ladies played their third round of the National Mason Trophy against Isca this week. At home, Sue Harriott and her team of the two Dees (Williams and Norman), and Heather Salter won by 23 shots to 10. Janine Orchard, playing with Carolyn Parker, Angie Fish and Joy Penberthy, did well at Isca, winning by 22 shots to 13 for an overall win of 24 shots to 23. They now come up against Torbay B.

Madeira ladies were involved in the Devon County in the National Atherley Trophy against Wiltshire last week. Christine Macaulay, Deirdre Norman, Janine Orchard, Joy Penberthy and Jan Roberts were all part of the squad when Devon won this round playing away at Chippenham by a comfortable 117 shots to 102.

Madeira men played the County Trophy against Honiton this weekend, winning by 87-82 shots. They are now into the Semi-Final when they will play either Sidmouth or Exonia.

Playing at Madeira in the Ken Boobyer Memorial Trophy, the home team won on two of the three rinks and overall by 59 shots to 42. Ken Roberts and his team of Captain Graham Cottey and Vice Doidge helped considerably with their impressive 27 shots to 9 win.

This fixture has been played annually since the inauguration of Madeira’s indoor club when Ken Boobyer brought a team from his home club Bittern Park to play against his England team colleague Bob Burch. Since Bob died recently, it is likely in future to be known as the Ken Boobyer/Bob Burch Memorial Trophy.

Three men’s triples team travelled to Sidmouth, where Danny Doran, playing with Alan Porter and Roy Lemin, won by 24 shots to 7 win, for an overall win of 51 shots to 38.

The Men’s Captain’s team played the ladies, led by Acting Captain Penny Preece. The ladies won two of the three triples but Ian Munro, playing with Mike Norman and Captain Graham Cottey, secured a 22 shots to 8 win for the men to win the encounter by just 50 shots to 47.
