Madeira Bowling Club started their indoor season with what was a busy Open Day last Saturday with potential new members coming for coaching on the following Friday, writes Jean Healey.

Coaching in the winter season is each Friday from 4.30pm through to 6pm.

During this time, Sandie and her team welcome, teach and explain club bowling with all equipment provided. Other times can be arranged if you contact Sandie first on 01395 266088.

After a week that had been set aside for general practice, three sessions of 24 members were needed to really start the season with a bang last Sunday for the Opening Drive organised by ladies’ indoor captain Margaret Humphrey and men’s indoor captain David Hitt.

Skips were chosen, teams organised by lucky dips, and all played six, four and four ends across the three rinks.

It proved to be great fun all round and, with several bowls sent into the far ditch, it also meant ‘penalty payment time’ and so the captain’s chosen charity – CRUSE (which offers bereavement help for those in need) was the beneficiary of a welcome boost!
