Madeira Bowling Club members have been busy on the greens, despite the unprecedented move to cancel matches due to the heat.

The club hosted the early rounds of the Bowls Devon section 3 ladies two-wood triples, with teams from all over East Devon competing.

Sue Harriott, Nicky Fiddemore and Christine Macaulay did well to reach the final but lost to Sue Evans and her team.

Harriott and her team are still in the Benevolent Triples, played earlier at Honiton, and face the section final against Honiton's Ann Dredge and team on August 18.

Madeira also hosted the Grace Mathews Top Club and, having been knocked out in the earlier rounds, manned the kitchen!

There was some excellent bowling by all four teams, with Torquay Kings going on to beat Bitton Park in the final.

The men's and ladies' representative teams have done well this year in reaching final rounds in the County Trophy, Top Club and semi-finals of the Inter-Club.

But their successful runs came to an end, with Madeira's men beaten by Torquay Kings in the Country Trophy and Top Club.

Kings won the Top Club match 4-1, but Bill Davies and his team held the fours.

The ladies of Madeira A lost their Inter-Club semi-final at Paignton against Crediton, who meet Honiton at a later date in the final, which was postponed due to the extreme heat on Saturday.

Members also enjoyed a fun drive for the Jubilee Cup, followed by a barbeque organised by Ian and Kathy Munroe and the social committee.

Club chairman Dave Moody and his team were clear winners with an impressive plus-30 shot difference and received the trophy from captain of the day Vic Doidge.

The competition committee also introduced a new internal competition for the first time - the Friendship Pairs.

Historically the club has had a competition for married pairs, but this excluded so many, and 18 pairs took part, some married, some mixed and some not!

Due to the heat three games of eight ends were cut to three of six and four bowls each to three, with Jude Latta and husband Chris Reed winning all there with a plus-13 shot difference to claim the inaugural honours.

Club president Keith Weeks presented them with their trophy and a consolation prize to Jenny Smith, who managed to elude most shots all afternoon!
