It has been a generally quiet week at Madeira in terms of news.
With the start of so many club and county competitions there has been little bowling time for anything else but the superb bowling weather has not been wasted.
However, it was an important week for Jenny Charles, who was presented with her County Badge by Bowls Devon lady president Vicky Hingston at Jenny’s first appearance for the County at Bridport against the Isle of Wight ladies.
She was well supported by Madeira ladies with Chris Macaulay, Jan Roberts, Liz Healy, Sandy Cox, Jean Rainton and Deirdre Norman all playing for Devon on the same day.
Jenny enjoyed her introduction to County bowling and, although all scores were close, on this occasion Devon didn’t have a winning rink. Madeira members congratulate Jenny on her well-earned award.
The only friendly of the week was against North Tawton, who brought with them Tim Bevan who until last summer played at Madeira. It was a most enjoyable afternoon on which Madeira did well to win four of the six mixed triples and overall by 105 shots to 90 helped by Jenny Smith and her team of Chris Fox and Gordon Medlock who had a convincing a plus 23 shot difference.
The representative teams have had a difficult week against Crediton.
Madeira lost the national mixed double rink Tony Allcock trophy on both rinks and overall by 26 shots to 40.
The away fixture in the EDL (Exeter and District League) didn’t fare any better with Madeira losing three of the four rinks to Crediton.
However, there was one bright spot with Ian Thomson playing with Chris Reed, Roger Williams and Bob Finch winning their rink by 13 shots to six.
Terry Reardon and Bill Davis have also done well in the Bowls Devon Men’s Pairs, winning their half of the section to reach the last 16 in this competition. Good luck to them in the section finals in July.
