Madeira begin a new outdoor season of bowling

After the long winter wait the opening drive of a new Madeira Bowls Club season was played out on a lovely sunny day, writes Matt Marriott.

Despite many muscles and bones being flexed they still were heard creaking while getting back into the swing of things!

The opening game is traditionally organised by the vice captains and this left Angela Denner and Dennis Fears with 95 players to select into teams.

As usual it was a spider that started the day off on a round robin of five sets with tea halfway through.

The bandits soon showed themselves, and ultimately turned out to be the team skipped by Jacky Howle with Dave Clarbull, Jenny Charles and John Hopkins who returned a score of plus 30, not losing an end until the 12th!

The mars bars went to Josie Glaister, Pete Wood, David Atkinson, all skipped by Bob Humphrey. However, I am sure they won’t let the score of minus 31 to be known!

Congratulations must go to the team of members, led by the greens committee for the excellent condition of the greens.

They were bowling well from the start of play. A lot of hard work was carried out over the winter months by so many, so thanks to all of them.

I’m sure we would all want to wish the outdoor captains Anne Doidge and Charles Darke together with their vice captains all the best for a very good season both playing and weather wise.
