PHEAR PARK BOWLS: Phear Park slipped out of the Top Cub and Foxlands Trophy at the first hurdle when they came up against Madeira, who once again proved to be the teams 'nemesis'.

The 4-1 scoreline at the close of play was 'harsh' on the Park bowlers as four of the five games were close encounters but sadly only the rink of Les Parr, Peter Burch, Reg Paxton and skip Brian Green won, in a game that they lead from start to finish to claim a 20-10 victory.

In the 2-wood singles Jim Letten was level at 12-12 before going down 21-14, and in the 4-wood, Jack Coates was also level at 12-12 before a couple of fours from his opponent contributed to a 21-15 defeat. The pairing of Gerry Sharland and David Evans produced a strong showing, racing into a 7-0 lead, and they were also ahead at 15-12 before going down 21-17.

Seaton also proved too strong in the Foxlands Trophy as Phear Park went down 22-17 at home and 25-14 away.

Phear Park 'A' maintained their strong form in the over 60's with victories over Culm Vale 'A' and Heavitree 'A' with Jack Coates, Tom Russell and Bob Smith, in fine form against the Mid Devon side and Smith (skip), Coates and Reg Paxton who claimed a fine win in the victory over the Exeter side.

There was not good news though from a game with Crediton A that saw Park's bowlers beaten 8-0 although in this match both David Evans (14-16) and Smith (15-18) can count themselves unfortunate not to have taken something from the contest.

The 'B' side achieved a splendid 8-0 win over Budleigh 'C', with Roy Bateman, Peter Burch, and skip Brian Green winning 17-13, and Gerry Sharland skipping Lawrie Harries and Jim Letten to a 25-15 victory. However, there were a couple of defeats in meetings against Tiverton West End (6-2) and Pinces Gardens (7-1), although in the latter match there were shots thre shots between the sides in the overall score.

The match with a very competitive Heavitree side produced a 113-74 final score with the top performing rink being that of Liz Robins, Jim Letten, Reg Paxton, and skip David Martin, who won 26-12 thanks to a flurry of shots over the last few ends. All four rinks won in a mixed match at home to Honiton, with Liz Robins, Les Parr, John Anderson and skip Brian Green the highest winners with 26-11.

The ladies took on Adfinem Tourists and ended unbeaten on all three rinks with Janet Martin, Joan Evans, Margo Allen and skip Betty Bourne winning 22-15. Sarah Westacott and her rink of Avis Bartlett, Gill Harding and Margaret Parr scored a double on the final end to win 16-15, whilst Anne Harding's rink drew 16-16, this after they held a three shot lead going into the last four ends.

In other matches there were defeats at Tiverton West End (69-75), and at home (45-91) to Feniton, whilst Lady Bay Tourists left Phear Park with a 96-84 win.

Peter Burch, Gerry Sharland and skip David Evans are into the next round of the County unbadged triples after an 18-6 victory in their latest outing.
