Lewin and Brown aid county cause

TENNIS EAST Devon Tennis Centre juniors Max Lewin and Isabella Brown were in the thick of the action as Devon's top 14 and under teams dug deep to avoid relegation at the LTA County Cup.

TENNISEAST Devon Tennis Centre juniors Max Lewin and Isabella Brown were in the thick of the action as Devon's top 14 and under teams dug deep to avoid relegation at the LTA County Cup.After losing to Northamptonshire 6-0 on the opening day at Solihull (Warks), Devon boys drew with the Isle of Man, with Lewin winning his singles 6-0, 6-0 and, on the third day, they won a winner-take-all clash against relegation rivals Hereford & Worcester (6-3).George Locke (Exmouth) was impressive to win 6-4, 6-2 and Max Lewin continued his run of good form to win his doubles before he and partner Peter Underhill (North Devon) just came up short in the doubles. But Devon won the day to stay in Group 5a after a doubles victory from Underhill and Lewie Parker, much to the delight of coaches Tom Lambert (Exeter TC) and Adam Tapp (EG&CC)."There were excellent performances all weekend," said Lambert, "and the referee commented that our team was a credit to Devon. Devon girls also avoided the drop when they beat Cambridgeshire 4-0 on the final day at Edgbaston Priory. A rain-affected match saw just the singles completed, with Isabella Brown among the winners.Devon lost to Staffordshire 4-2 but there was a victory in the doubles for Isabella Brown and Sian Payne and the pair was successful in the losing draw with South Wales. Former Wimbledon junior Charlotte Wallace (Teignmouth), who managed the team, was proud of them all. "I thought they all did very well and they worked hard and on another day we could easily have won the two matches that we lost.Devon Squads.
