IN AN otherwise quiet week for the ladies, the big news is the success of Madeira's Liz Healy who, with Jan Roberts, Pat Harris and Jacky Howle. have played their way to the last two in Devon and booked their place in the National finals at Leamington, writes Jenny Smith.Five rinks from Madeira took part in the Fours competition, the first rounds of which were held at Crediton. Two teams made it through to the second round before being knocked out, namely Pat Boman with Janet Allen, Jean Bridge and Jenny Smith and Sue Harriott, who skipped her team of Angela Denner, Christine Macaulay and Liz Smerdon. However, Liz Healy's team played through to the Section Final which was held in Bideford last Friday. They played against Abbrook Park and won by one shot on an extra end - 21-20. Their second round was against Brixham, who conceded after 16 ends, and they won their third round against a strong team from North Tawton, skipped by Nicky Wilkins winning by 21 shots to 17.Also on Friday evening, Madeira played another round of the Exeter and District League away against St Thomas. It was a very close match with Madeira winning by 3 shots on one rink, whilst losing by 4 shots on the other. Madeira's winning team was Elizabeth Haynes, Ann Doidge, Jean Rainton and skip Eileen Bagley with 19 shots to 16.
