Boat anglers are really enjoying this settled weather with fish showing everywhere.
Lewis Hodder skipper of Pegasus out of Lyme Regis has been finding plenty of Black Bream, Pollack, and Bass on his inshore trips and when fishing further offshore has been finding plenty of larger Pollack along with Cod, Spurdogs to 17lbs and Tope to 30lbs.
Shaun Pedley and his boat Our Joe’l from Paignton have had anglers on board this week from Hertfordshire and Essex, who found plenty of Pollack and Cod on the wrecks, including fish cod over 10lbs for Vernon and Taylor and a Turbot of 5lbs 9oz to the rod of Bob on a trip to the Skerries banks.
Marcus Ward took his Kayak out at Salcombe and was rewarded with a fine Gilthead Bream. Members of Honiton SAC travelled to Penzance on a two-day trip, where they caught 22 species, including two new club records, a 1lb 7oz Greater Weaver for Liam Kubaczka and a megrim of 1lb 6oz 3dms. Pete Gregory fishing from a boat in the Portland area had the largest fish this week, a Conger Eel of 72lbs.
From the shore, Saleem Ali has been searching out the Mullet with some success. Harley Heyward travelled to Minehead for a shore session, finding the Smoothhounds obliging with a session best fish of arounds 8lbs the successful method being a pulley pennel rig baited with a bluey squid wrap. Mackerel are still being caught from the piers, breakwaters, rocks and beaches with an evening flood tide being the best time to fish for them.
Kennick Flyfishers fished the latest round of the Snowbee Top Rod competition, this time visiting Clatworthy Reservoir high in the Brendon Hills, top rod being Gerry Scott of Brixham with a bag of five fish for a weight of 13lbs 4oz. The next two places being taken by Tom Hendy and Alan Riddell.
This sudden warm spell of weather has put the Carp in spawning mode and many waters have closed this week to allow the fish some peace.
Paignton’s Bob Wooster landed an 18lbs Mirror Carp from Newbarn Angling Centre just before the spawning started and Josh Hosking fishing the specimen lake at Upham Farm took a new personal best Mirror Carp of 20lbs 1oz.
Alex Mutter visited the Exeter Canal, one of the few places in Devon where pike can be caught, and fished a short session using a homemade wooden wobbler, landing three Pike with the best tipping the scales at 9lbs 2oz.
I have three boat trips this week weather permitting after a variety of species and hope to have some good pictures and reports for next week. Until then, tight lines and stay safe.
