Alex Lane is the new Under-17 European badminton champion after he landed the title in Portugal.
The Exmouth teenager was seeded number one for the tournament and he joins a select band of English players to have been crowned Europe’s’ number one for, in the past forty years, just four other English player have achieved the honour!
What was so impressive about Lane’s triumph was that he achieved it dropping only a single game on his way to the title.
After beating Denmark’s highly rated Rasmus Gemke, 21-19, 21-9, to land the title, Lane said: “It feels so good to be European champion, I can’t really believe it. I played the game of my life. I was a little nervous at the start but settled in and took control at 18 all in the first set. Rasmus (Gemke) is a good player and I’d discussed tactics beforehand with my coach and everything went according to plan, especially in that second set”
Victory in Portugal confirms Lane as the top Under-17 player in Europe!
Brother Ben Lane was also at the European Championships and he and doubles partner Sean Vendy of Milton Keynes were defeated in the quarter finals by a French pairing, only after three very close games.
The Lane brothers were both part of the England team that also landed the silver medal at the Europeans Team event. Both were undefeated in all their games with Alex winning all his singles games and Ben and Sean being undefeated in the men’s doubles.
