SWORDSMEN and women from Sidmouth and East Devon Fencing Club competed at the recent Glastonbury competition.Rohan Knowles, of Topsham (pictured left), showed outstanding technique and footwork, achieving a bronze medal in the U11 boys' foil event. After success in the poules and quarter final, he was unfortunate to lose out in the semi where, despite defending well against an unconventional left-handed fencer, he found it difficult to land his hits on his opponent's frequently obscured target. Senior coach Val Morrish (Topsham) said: "Rohan fenced excellently and had he won the semi final it would have been a very interesting final as he has beaten the eventual winner on previous occasions."Finn Manning (Clyst St Mary) fenced brilliantly in his debut competition, gaining a well deserved bronze in the U9 boys' foil. He maintained good technique throughout a long day of fencing, making many hits with well timed and accurate lunges.Simon Ames (Lympstone), U13 boys' foil, also fenced well, achieving 6th place. He took the number 3 seed to a 10 all tie at one time before his opponent seized victory in the final seconds of extra time.
