EXE 1st XI faced a tough restart to the season after the Christmas break at home to Buckingham, writes Linda Webb.

The visitors applied the early pressure and the hosts were forced into a re-shuffle after losing Helen Johnson with a head injury.

After the unfortunate Johnson was helped from the pitch and despatched to hospital, the game re-started with the visitors continuing to press but they were thwarted by the stout defence of Jane Cann, Angie Slade and Harriet Payne.

The game was being contested at a fast pace and the visitors struck first, scoring from a short corner midway through the first half.

Exe bounced back and were soon level through Jo Pope who fired home from the head of the circle to take the sides in at 1-1.

Early in the second half a Claire Thomas corner was tucked away at the far post by Kirsty Cruden to see the hosts into the lead but, from the re-start, the visitors found an instant reply with a penalty flick.

The hosts continued to press and, after some neat interchanges, Claire Thomas drove the ball into the visitors' circle where Linda Webb slipped it round the keeper and into the net to seal a superb 3-2 win.

This outstanding victory keeps Exe in third spot in the table with only Cannock and Barnes above them.

Next up is this coming weekend's trip to Staines where they will seek to go one better than the draw they took from the meeting in Exeter earlier in the season.
