THE Budleigh Croquet Club staged the Women’s Championships last week, writes Charles Townshend. The event attracted a larger entry than in previous years and what transpired was some tremendously competitive croquet! What became very obvious, as the action unfolded is that there is a new young star in the croquet world in Gabrielle Higgins. In 2008, Gabrielle sported a handicap of 3.5 and was a good B class player. She has since brought her handicap down to scratch and is playing with impressive control and skill. She certainly made the best use of her visit to Budleigh with rapid progress to the final where she defeated Carol Smith, last year’s champion, with two wins in the best of three final. She really sealed her entry to the A class with her first triple peel in match conditions, a feat that earned her a Croquet Association silver medal. The Women’s trophies include a handsome silver cup, a gold casket and gold locket. In addition, she won one of the two splendid cups for the mixed Doubles in partnership with Keith Aiton Gabrielle said: “I really enjoyed the experience of pairing up with one of the finest croquet players in the country. It was a real boost to my endeavours to further develop my skill and knowledge of the game. His tactical experience is incredible.” We look forward to seeing Gabrielle in action at Budleigh again in the future.
