MADEIRA LADIES continue to produce a regular dose of high quality closely contested encounters and the triples team of Liz Healy, Jan Roberts and Jill Perrin are through to next week's section finals in the County Triples.

Elisabeth Haynes has played her way through to the section finals of the 2-wood singles whilst in the national over 55 Pairs Jenny Turner and Pat Boman were unfortunately on the wrong end of a nail biting finish to their game with a Crediton pairing. Leading 20-15 on the 19th end the Crediton double fought back in the final two ends to win the match 21-20, but in the same competition Jan Roberts and Pat Harris won their match to go through to the next round.

The Club Handicap produced some exceptional first round matches. International bowler Sue Harriott's +9 handicap was nearly enough for Elisabeth Haynes to pull off a victory but, with Elisabeth herself playing off +3, it was Harriott who prevailed in a thrilling tie that was only decided at the 36th end.

If that contest was considered 'long' then it was a 'marathon' for Liz Healy and Jan Roberts, who were both +7 and so evenly matched that it took four hours of bowling to separate them. At the end, with Roberts holding a match lie Healy delivered perfectly to claim the game. Also through to round two are the following ladies: S Cox, C Macaulay, C King, E Bagley, S Webb and A Denner.

To complete the week's fixtures, the Madeira ladies played a centenary year match at Sidmouth with two rinks of ladies combining with the men for a contest that was won on both rinks, fittingly for the occasion, by the hosts.
