County competition moved into high gear this past week and a number of Madeira ladies were prominent, writes Mary Ann Dowrick.

In the Devon Ladies Triples third round¸ Skip Sue Harriott with Liz Smerdon and Christine Macaulay won a tough game against Angie Fish and Co. of Budleigh, while

Skip Sandie Cox with Ann Bellamy and Nikki Fiddimore beat opponents from Sidmouth. Then in the bowling version of ‘family feud’, sisters-in-law Liz Healy and Jean Healey went head to head, with no quarter asked or given, until finally Liz’s team came out on top.

The family theme was continued by way of sibling rivalry in the Over-55 pairs, where sisters Sue Harriott and Christine Macaulay knocked heads with Sue’s twin sister Nikki Fiddimore and her partner Jacky Howle (skip). As might be expected when two sisters gang up on a third, Sue and Christine emerged as victors 27-18. Meanwhile Skip Jean Rainton with Shirley Smith fell victim to a rampant Skip Catherine King with Jan Roberts 22-11.

In the first round of the over-55 singles, both veteran Norma Cureton and Mary Ann Dowrick advanced by beating opponents from Sidmouth and Seaton respectively.

Moving up a decade or so, in the over-70s pairs, skip Annette Flockhart with Pat Harris managed a comfortable win against Norma Cureton and Val Allam.

In the Devon Ladies Pairs, Madeira monopolised the spoils at Budleigh Salterton and at home. After several notable scalps were taken, Skip Pat Boman with Jenny Smith, Skip Jacky Howle with Nikki Fiddimore, Skip Pat Harris with Jan Roberts and Skip Liz Healy with Jill Perrin, all advanced to the third round.

Meanwhile Liz Smerdon and company have won through to the County Fours Section Finals where they will meet Sue Evans and her team from Honiton.

Turning to inter club action in the Non Badged Triples league, Madeira lost their match against good neighbours Phear Park. Then, honours were shared in a match with Sidmouth where each team won on one rink. For Madeira, the successful trio comprised Skip Jean Healey with Debbie Fox and Norma Cureton who edged their match 18-15.

In friendly competition, Madeira enjoyed their outing to Honiton where three rinks of triples all emerged victors. Top rink was skipped by Jenny Smith with Dee Williams and Angela Denner. Overall Madeira swept their opponents 63-36

In the first round of the Grace Mathews Topclub, Madeira B team won all five disciplines against opponents from Feniton. The results were as follows: in the Two Wood Singles - Pat Harris 21-8; Four Wood Singles - Janine Orchard 24-14; Pairs - Christine Macaulay and Sue Harriott 21-16; Triples - Catherine King, Liz Smerdon, Angela Denner 23-12; Fours - Liz Healy, Annette Flockhart, Jacky Howle and Jan Roberts 24-10 .

Finally, congratulations go out to Jan Roberts, Liz Smerdon, and Liz Healy who keep the Madeira flag flying with their selection to join the County squad for the Johns Trophy. No doubt they will do Exmouth proud.
