Last Saturday two Exmouth Harriers were on the track for the Ken Trickey Memorial Meeting at Exeter Arena, writes Dave Eveleigh.
They tackled much shorter distances than London and Llanelli bound Marathon running club-mates would the next day.
Here the physical demands do not last as long, but are more intense.
Richard Hawes ran his first ever track 5000 metres and recorded a baseline time of 19:07, showing an impressive turn of speed, for a male in the 45-49 age group, over the last 200 metres, to come third in a field of five, which was mixed in age and gender.
In contrast to 5000 metres novice Richard Dave Eveleigh had well over a hundred 3000metres events under his belt when he lined up in a similarly mixed field of nine to race over that distance.
He finished seventh in 11:54, a more than respectable time for a 59 year-old, and a useful addition to his Club Championship portfolio.
