MADEIRA LADIES played their first round in the Foxlands league against Kingsbridge and were delighted to win by a comfortable margin, writes Jenny Smith.

The match was played over four rinks with two contested at home and two away.

Madeira won on three of the rinks and took the overall match by a score of 99 shots to 62.

In the away match Sue Harriott skipped her team of Angela Denner, Christine Macaulay and Pat Boman to a convincing 30 shots to 11 win whilstCatherine King and her team of Jan Roberts, Pat Cain and Sandie Cox also did well to win by 19 shots to 15.

At home, Annette Flockhart's team of Elizabeth Haynes, May Dyson and Pat Harris had an impressive 31 shots to 13 win whilst Liz Healy's rink played well in a tight game which they finally lost by 19 shots to 23.

However, as is the way with bowls - you win some, and you lose some, - Madeira's mixed team in the Egham Trophy were heavily beaten on all rinks by Torquay United.

Meanwhile the National and county competitions continue at full speed.

There were mixed fortunes for Sue Harriott. She had a decisive win over a Honiton bowler in the Champion of Champions which she won by 21 shots to 6.

However, her National Triples team, which included Angela Denner and Christine Macaulay, lost their round against Sue Evans, Joan Heard and Carol Fisher of Honiton by 18 shots to 30.

Ironically, Katherine King with Jan Roberts and Pat Harris played against the same Honiton team in the County Triples and did well to win through to the next round with an impressive 15 shots to 3 win.

Finally, in the National Singles competition, Jan Roberts had a comfortable win against a bowler from Torquay United.

She won by 21 shots to 10 and will now play fellow member Sue Harriott in the next round.
