EXMOUTH Harriers fielded a six man squad for the second round in the Ironbridge Winter 3k Series, writes Bob Woodall.

The race was held at the Exeter Arena Athletic Track on Monday evening and Andy Johnson, Lee Russell, Dave Eveleigh, John Parrett, Jim Wyatt and Les Turner were the runners in Harriers colours and four of the six had taken part in the previous round.

On a night ideal for racing, Dave Eveleigh, John Parrett and Les Turner all clipped several seconds off their first round times.

Andy Johnson led the Harriers home in a time of 11:42. Lee Russell was second in 12:46, finishing just ahead of Dave Eveleigh in 12:52.

John Perratt finished in 13:02, Jim Wyatt got home in 14:26 and Les Turner completed the run in 15:02.

The first runner to finish the distance was James Denne of the Exeter Harriers in a time of 8:57, but that was seven seconds slower than local athlete Tom Merson had run in Round One.

Merson was unable to compete in Round Two.

The first female athlete was Charlotte Davies, running for Exeter University, who crossed the line in 10:33.

Round Three is being staged on Monday, December 6, at the same venue.
