Exmouth Harriers produced some amazing results in two Devon ultra-running events on last weekend.
Hannah Bown and Terry McKie lined up with over 200 other runners at the Princetown Community Centre at 9.30am on Saturday for the start of the Dartmoor Discovery Ultra Marathon. The race started and finished in Princetown and the runners had to tackle 32 miles of ups and downs on some of Dartmoor’s toughest hills; the race is the longest single lap road ultra-marathon in the UK.
Hannah excelled expectations in her first attempt at the DD (as it's affectionately known) by coming 28th overall in 4 hours 37 minutes 46 seconds. She was the 1st female to finish, plus she also took the prizes for 1st FV40 and the 1st Female Newcomer.
Hannah will now be concentrating her training to compete in the Virgin London Marathon in October 2021.
Terry was running his second tough ultra-race in the last five weeks after completing the Endurancelife Devon Coastal Ultra-Marathon in the South Hams on May 8. Terry finished in Princetown in great shape in 165th position overall in a time of 6 hours 7 minutes 46 seconds.
Fourteen Harriers took part in Conquer24; a new 24-hour race which took place in the beautiful grounds of Powderham Castle. Some competed solo and others in relay teams of 2-8 runners.
The five-mile undulating course took the runners around the castle’s stunning trails with breathtaking  views of the River Exe and then through the castle itself. The event was superbly organised by Steve Crompton of Warrior Chimps.
The event started at midday on Saturday 5th and finished at midday on Sunday 6th June with nighttime navigation required using head torches for the seven hours of darkness.
Chris Murrin ran solo for the 24 hours and finished in 20th position, completing 16 laps of 5 miles (80 miles), an amazing feat that also clocked up his 85th marathon overall towards his target of 100 marathons before June 2022.
The Harriers eight-man team consisting of Sam & James Kelly, Simon Minting, Oliver White, Adam Miller, Tristan Kelsall-Spurr, Scott Jamieson and Tom Packer lead the event from start to finish and between them completed 43 laps of the five-mile course (215 miles) during the 24 hours and were awarded the trophy for the 1st Men’s Large Team.
Sam Kelly not only ran the fastest leg by a Harrier but also the fastest leg overall in an incredible 27 minutes 49 seconds.
There were four Harriers competing in the Allsort Warriors team with Nick Ramm, Amy Tew, Nicola Kelly and Jim Comer joined by a guest runner Rob Kirk. The team ran really well throughout the 24 hours and completed 26 laps (130 miles) to be placed third in the Mixed Small Team category.
Alongside the 24-hour team relay and solo events, there were two individual races; one of 5 miles and the other of 10 miles. Hayley Johns competed in the 10-mile race over two laps of the undulating course and finished in 13th position in 1 hour 48 minutes 9 seconds.
Alison and Des White both competed in the one-lap race with Des finishing in 1st place in 34.56 and Alison in 7th place in 50.26.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event and the Harriers are looking forward to entering more teams in the future Conquer24 races.
