There’s a new champion on the local block and this one is closing in on her 93rd birthday!

Yes, stand aside Novac Djokovic and get back Rory McIlroy!

Joining the celebrated at the top of the rankings is Polly Newcombe, nearly 93 years young, and top of the year’s rankings at the Raleigh bridge club.

Brilliant card play and positive bidding made Polly the champion and she received the Thomson Cup which is presented to the player with the best average results over the year.

The presentation of the splendid trophy was done by Raleigh bridge club chairman Hugh Stedham.

In second place for the year was Polly’s partner Christine Jacks, while Exmouth bridge legend Shelagh Hughes just pipped partner John Dick for third place.

The bridge club meets every Monday evening for Duplicate bridge at the croquet club in Budleigh Salterton.
