The Gazelles are a new team playing in the Exmouth and District Netball League, writes Hayley Taylor.

The team evolved from ‘Back to Netball’ sessions organised by the league at the beginning of the summer and the ladies are very excited about their first season.

They met fellow ‘newbies’, Tigers, in what turned out to be a hard fought Thursday evening match.

The teams have met previously when they shared some pre-season training.

However, the gloves were off for their first league meeting and there was very little between the two teams in the first quarter.

Gazelles took a while to settle into the game and made plenty of unforced errors whereas Tigers remained calm and composed.

It was Gazelles who stamped their authority with some great shooting from Alison Horton and Rhian Rose giving them a slim 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. With some team changes, Gazelles took to the court for the second quarter and their confidence was boosted with a couple of early goals.

Tigers claimed some rebounds and interceptions with some strong performances from Vicky Gale, Leanne Cormac and Laura Kyte, but were unable to convert their efforts into goals whereas Gazelles had doubled their tally by half-time.

It was several minutes into the third quarter before either side scored and Tigers claimed the first goal.

However, this was to be their only goal in that quarter. Charlie Baker came on as GA for Gazelles and continuing a strong partnership with Alison, notched up a significant lead with some impressive shooting.

Gazelles’ Anna Higgins put up a strong defence with a rather ‘balletic’ but effective performance making life difficult for Tigers in and around the circle.

Gazelles built on their lead in the final quarter, Tigers never resting on their laurels and were rewarded with a couple of goals late in the day but truly deserved a higher tally of goals for the effort they put in.

Gazelles, who are kindly sponsored by Projuice and CBS, claimed a convincing victory of 30-5, but had to work hard to achieve it.

The Players of the Match awards went to Alison Horton of Gazelles and Vicky Gale of Horton Tigers.
