THERE were 25 competitors who took to the pristine greens for the annual tournament for players on the second handicap level (between 2 and 8), writes Charles Townshend. The system has a range for tournament play from 20 down to minus 3 and this year's entry was the largest in recent years. Players came from as far away as Kent and Southport in Lancashire with seven local club members taking part. A total of 88 games were played starting at 9.30am on the first day and ending around 4pm on the Sunday. The clear winner was Tony Forbes, a rapidly improving, 3 handicap player from Cheltenham who only took the game up four years ago. His tally of games (all level played under advanced rules) saw him completing eight games and losing only once. By the end of he weekend his handicap had dropped down to one of two and a half. He carried off the winner's trophy and an engraved glass goblet that he will retain as a memento of his success. In second place was Melanie Foster from Southport, another player who has made rapid progress down the handicap scale. She only lost two games out of the eight she played. Third place was shared by several players who each had a net three wins; among them were Peter Jones and Ken Wood from Budleigh. Ken was presented with the prize for the fastest game, completing his most rapid victory in a mere 42 minutes which really is croquet at a rapid rate of knots! At the post-tournament prize giving, the Chairman of the Club, His Honour Brian Pollock, congratulated all the competitors and warmly thanked Julie Horsley who had managed the tournament with her usual skill and efficiency. The club now has a few days breather before we begin the May Week Tournament which starts on Monday 4.Anyone interested in seeing the sport is most welcome to look in during the week while play is in progress.Give us a call on (013959) 442548 we are always happy to welcome new friends aboard.
