APPLEDORE (3) 5, EXMOUTH TOWN (0) 0: THINGS conspired against Town long before kick off on Saturday. The Bank Holiday weekend traffic made it a journey from South Devon to North Devon - a large number of the side currently live in South Devon - that was much longer than expected and so the team arrived too late to undergo the sort of preperation they would have liked.
Add to that the home side scoring three times in the opening nine minutes - two of them from the penalty spot - and the afternoon was set to be as disasterous as it turned out. After that early set back they began to pass the ball around competently and got to half time with no further addition to the scoreline.
However, the hosts netted a fourth early in the second half and that put paid to any remaining hope of a Town fightback and a fifth late in the contest simply added insult to injury. Town's Chris Dowling said: "The arduous journey and enforced lack of preparation probably left us too short but I thought we battled well after the early goals. The back five did very well once they settled into the game and if they can continue to perform like that then we'll soon see a change in fortunes, results wise."
Goalkeeper Adrian Pullin and his back four of Jay Reid, Lee Groffon, Mark Broome and Joe Crooke served their side well in a game against a team that are expected to be amongst the pace makers in the division this term.
There's two games coming up in the space of five days for Town with Saturday's trip to Bovey Tracey followed by next Wednesday night's Southern Road visit of Totnes & Dartington.
Chris Slough is now with the squad, the former Dawlish and Bideford player becoming the 202nd transfer of the new Peninsula League season when he completed his switch from Galmpton United recently but the new man has been unable to make his debut
Cowling says: "Hopefully we'll have Chris Slough available. He's been struggling with an ankle problem but is getting closer to a debut, which will give us a big lift.
