Exmouth Town boss Richard Pears breathed a big sigh of relief after his team's 2-1 success over Stoke Gabriel on Saturday.
Town went into the game having lost their previous two with the Easter defeat to Budleigh Salterton followed swiftly by a Throgmorton Cup semi-final loss to Elburton Villa.
Pears said: “We showed some real courage and nerve to bounce straight back after what were two crushing blows. The cup loss at Elburton was obviously not so hard to take for they showed why they are a Premier outfit and underlined for us what we need to have when we get up to play that standard of side every week. The difference was simply their ability in the final third. They were clinical. The Budleigh defeat was the killer one! That hurt, really hurt, I felt we chose the wrong time and the wrong place, to under-perform. That happens in a season and, of course, when it does the key is to see what sort of a response your team can serve up. The Throgmorton Cup tie was always a huge ask so the key for me was the post-cup defeats response, and I was delighted with what the lads delivered against Stoke Gabriel. A League and Cup double remains top of the wish list. I expect my team to deliver.”
