TOPSHAM Town started the Devon and Exeter League Premier Division season with a superb performance and fully deserved 2-0 win over Thorverton at Coronation Field on the opening day of the season.

The Thors had done the double over the Tops in the last campaign and, given that boss Danny Carpenter was without four of his front line, first choice players for the opener, the result was all the more impressive.

The game was won with a goal in each half, with Ian Curran netting before the break and teenager Ace High, who had come off the bench as early as the 10th minute for knee injury victim, James Ware, scored the second ten minutes from time.

Topsham boss Danny Carpenter was forced to dig deep to get a side out for the game against a team who many pundits had suggested would be there or thereabouts come next May.

Liam Joy, at just 16 years of age, was given his senior bow alongside Ian Curran with Adi Carpenter sweeping behind him, and the youngster gave the sort of performance that suggests he has a great future in the game for the Tops.

The win was no fluke and was born out of the side having a really solid look about them with the reliable Robbie Raddon between the posts and wing backs Charlie Cox and Stuart Tyler both keen to get up and down the line to assist in attack and help out in defence.

Carpenter said: "I was really pleased and the lads have given us a real platform to work from. There is no hiding, the blunt fact is we want promotion this term and everything we have done, and are doing, is geared towards taking this football club up into the Peninsula League. It won't be easy, as I think there are a number of clubs who could put up a good case for ending top of the pile, but, if we can maintain the sort of level of play we showed against Thorverton, then we will have a big part to play in the season."

The Tops were back in action last night against Exmouth Amateurs and you can read a report on the match at www.exmouthjournal.co.uk from today.
