Brixington Blues Under-9s eased their way into the semi-final of the Exeter and District Youth League KO Cup with a single goal success against Heavitree.

Blues began well, but quickly found the Heavies to be well-organised opposition.

The first of the game’s chances fell to Harry Batten, who made a good run down the right before firing a shot just wide of the mark.

Blues began to gain a foothold in the contest, boosted by Rian McCann tracking the opposition well, limiting their attacks, and Oliver Dawkins linked up well with Harry Tooby in midfield.

The next scoring opportunity came after McCann fed the ball out to Batten on the right and he weaved his way past three players before rifling the ball goalwards, only to see the Heavitree glovesman make a splendid save to tip the ball over the bar.

Brixington continued to pressurise their opponents with Oliver Dawkins’ trademark long thrown-ins causing havoc in their defence while, at the other end of the pitch, Willem Stortenbeker played his position in front of Frank Shelton at the back beautifully, letting nothing past him and he also showed great awareness to distribute the ball really well throughout the game.

Just before the break, a corner was awarded to Blues and, when the ball was delivered into the six yard area, Tooby pounced to send his side into the interval with the advantage.

After the break, Josh Lawrence and Charlie Cain came on for Harry Tooby and Frank Shelton and both contributed as Blues continued to control proceedings.

However, it needed a brilliant save from Evan Clark in the Blues goal to preserve the lead and, thereafter, Stortenbeker and Cain tackled really well under pressure getting the ball to Josh Lawrence at the front, who kept running at the Heavitree defence.

Harry Batten was unlucky not to cap a terrific individual performance with the second goal, but Blues, as a team, showed discipline and commitment and withstood late Heavitree pressure to keep a clean sheet and deservedly win through to the semi-finals.

Blues team: Ryan McCann, Frank Shelton, Charlie Cain, Oliver Dawkins, Harry Batten, Josh Lawrence, Harry Tooby, Evan Clark, Willem Stortenbeker.
