EXMOUTH Amateurs moved confidently into second spot in the Devon and Exeter League Premier Division with a 2-0 home win over Alphington, writes Ross England.

The match followed a similar pattern of previous games with Ammies dominating the opening exchanges to such a degree that they could have scored four times in the first ten minutes!

However, a combination of indifferent finishing and some fortunate defending meant that the game remained without a goal.

The hosts, having survived the early pressure then came more into the game but, against a confident Ammies defence, it was no surprise that the game reached half-time as it started, at 0-0.

At the start of the second half the fitness and pace of the Ammies team was starting to show, but the vital opening goal would not come.

The opening goal came after the home side had been awarded what looked a threatening free-kick close to the Ammies area.

The kick was blocked and Mitchell Cudd broke clear and exchanged passes with Nobby Taras before slipping in Adam Bartlett, who needed no second invitation to run on and fire the ball past the Alphas' keeper.

Ammies were now in control and, following a Tim Wright corner, Josh Hill lost his marker to score and seal a most competent of 2-0 victories.

Next up for the side is a local derby meeting with Budleigh at Greenway Lane on Saturday.

The Ammies seconds took a first minute lead at Westexe, thanks to a Rob Hall goal, but then shipped four to go down 4-1.

The third team, with a bare eleven, played some excellent football at Cullompton Rangers 3rds, but were hamstrung by having to play the final 40 minutes a man short owing to injury and the Mid Devon side took full advantage to inflict a narrow 3-2 defeat on the visitors.

Ross Matthews and Dave Rees scored the Ammies goals.

This weekend the Ammies 2nd and 3rd teams are both at home entertaining North Tawton and Hemyock, respectively.
