Exmouth Town progressed to the next round of the South West Peninsula League Cup (Throgmorton Cup) with an emphatic 7-0 victory over Ottery St Mary, writes John Dibsdall.
Whilst the opposition were clearly not at full-strength, that should not detract from what was a fine Town performance and they too were without five regular players!
Town gave a debut to new signing Kyle Bassett who certainly made a debut impression to savour. The new man hit a hat-trick and struck the woodwork on three other occasions!
Bassett was one of three 19-year-olds in the Town starting line-up with the others being Tom Taylor, making his first full start and Jamie Moore.
Moore, who although not on then score sheet, did put in another composed performance, setting up Taylor’s goal.
Town’s other scorers were Tom Lowe with a fine turn and shot to open the scoring, Wayne Baker with an assist from Bassett and Adam Turner, coming off the sub’s bench to beat his marker and score with a fierce shot.
There will be sterner tests to come and Town have been drawn away in the next round of the competition when they will travel to Alphington on October 15..
This Saturday Town entertain Stoke Gabriel who are one of the favourites to win promotion this season.
Town shared six goals with Stoke Gabriel when they sides met earlier in the season in South Devon, since when Saturday’s visitors have beaten last year’s champions Liverton 4-2, and, last Saturday, thrashed Newton Abbot Spurs 7-0. Kick off at Southern Road on Saturday afternoon is 3pm.
