Salter brace as Budleigh ladies start new season with home win

Budleigh Salterton FC ladies opened their Westward Developments Devon Women Football League season with a 3-0 victory over Axminster Town ladies at Greenway Lane, writes SpursTom.
The match began with both teams trying to find their feet in a typical opening game of the season, as the managers search for their players’ best positions.
The early attacking play took place mostly in the visitors’ half, but it was not one-way traffic, as both keepers were brought into action. Sadly, as we approached the break, Axminster’s Stephanie Paynter got injured helping mount an attack. She was eventually taken to hospital with a suspected fractured ankle (we all wish her well). This unsettled the Tigers, for they conceded on the stroke of half-time, Amy Salter finding the back of the net to put the hosts 1-0 ahead.
Budleigh made a flying start to the second half and, six minutes in, doubled their lead when Sara Dunne saw her in-swinging corner turned into her own net by the visiting goalkeeper.
Axminster, to their credit, kept trying to get back into the game, but Lucy Burch was a rock in the home defence, a performance which earned her the Player of the Match vote.
Both sets of players must be praised for a sporting game on a very hard pitch on a very hot afternoon, but it was the home support that went home happiest as their team scored a late third, a second for Amy Salter.
