East Budleigh Reserves were in Good Friday action at Wood Lane Morchard Bishop, but the result was not so good as the home side produced a strong display, writes Mark Auton.

Budleigh battled well with Steve Davey and Rich Wyatt just being pipped for best player by Adam Wheatley. Wyatt with a clinical 30 yard drive and Joe Rosser hit the goals for a Budleigh side who did not let this result worry them.

On Monday Budleigh travelled to second in the table Feniton and produced a superb performance.

Budleigh’s tactics issued by player manager Colin Jeans were to defend the bottom end, but this was momentarily interrupeted as the home side went ahead in the 10th minute from a finely struck free-kick.

The home side were passing the ball around well, but Budleigh soaked up the pressure well looking to hit the hosts on the counter through Davey and ‘Banjo’ Wyatt in the midfield.

Budleigh levelled before the break when target man ‘Dogger’ Atkinson held the ball up nicely for Tom Christian who scored with an excellent overhead kick.

Budleigh began the second period hungry for more and when Atkinson was picked out by Mark ‘Crouchy’ Bown’s pinpoint kick he deftly lobbed Budleigh ahead. Atkinson was now in the mood and his rocket volley from 20 yards put Budleigh further ahead.

The home side threw what they had at Budleigh, but the back four of Wheatley, Jeans, Rich Wyatt and Gary ‘Grubshed’ Western defended stoutly.

Next to register an entry to goal of the day was comeback kid Ryan Britton whose searing volley nestled into the top corner from 25 yards to make it 4-1 and when Rosser crossed Britton rounded off the scoring for number five.

Man of the Match went to Atkinson for a Budleigh side who are in action at Vicarage Road against Axmouth on Sunday (April 7) at 3pm in the Golesworthy Cup.
