Budleigh bounced back from their opening day mauling at Teignmouth to bank three points from their opening Greenway Lane game in this seasons South West Peninsula League, Eastern Division, writes Alan Beer.

The Robins took the lead on seven minutes when Mark Lever’s 20-yard strike went in off the right hand post.

Ten minutes later Jack Greenslade was denied when he cut in from the right wing only to see the outstretched boot of Matt Slark prevent the ball entering the net.

The second goal duly arrived in the 20th minute when Slark brought down Greenslade and player-boss Danny Williams made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Four minutes before the interval, James Nicholls’ long clearance found Greenslade on the edge of the 18-yard box and his shot beat Slark to send the Robins into the break with a three goal lead.

It took just four minutes from the re-start for the Robins to further extend their advantage when a Williams effort was parried by Slark only for David Lever to steal in and slot home from close range.

The Ottery keeper was then at full strength to tip a Mark Lever header over the bar after a neat combination between Greenslade and Darren Carr.

The near-perfect afternoon for the Robins was spoiled in the closing stages when the Otters got a consolation goal when Dan Norman and Chris Belston combined well for the latter to apply the last touch.

Budleigh boss Danny Williams said: “It was a good response from the opening game. I think some of the team needed that little bit extra time to adapt to the new level and it was not ideal starting against what looked a really good side (Teignmouth on the opening day). We were bright from the start, got stuck in and got our just rewards to be three up at the break. The second half was something of a disappointment as we only scored once and they (Ottery) also scored but, to be fair to the team, the job was done in then first 45 minutes.”

Budleigh team: Pullin, Pidgeon, Nicholls, Pallett, Hancock, Nield, M Lever, D Lever, Greenslade, Williams, Carr; Subs M Searle and C Shipton.

On Saturday Budleigh make the short trip to Axminster for a Sector Lane meeting with an Axminster Town side who have made a poor start top the season.

The week after the Robins stage an FA Vase tie at their Greenway Lane headquarters with the visit of Toolstation League, Premier Division outfit Barnstaple Town.
